Garage, Carport and Driveway Designs in Kenya: House Plans With Single, Double and Triple Garages
By the HousePlans Kenya design team · 4 October 2026 · 11 min read

House plans with garage in Kenya are more popular than ever. Car ownership has grown across Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nakuru and every major town. Families now own two or three vehicles, and they want them safe, shaded and close to the front door. However, a garage takes up valuable land. Therefore, the right parking solution depends on your plot size, budget, security needs and lifestyle.
This guide covers every parking option for Kenyan homes. We explain single, double and triple garages, carports and car porches, stilt and basement parking, and driveway finishes such as cabro, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate and grass pavers. Additionally, we cover turning circles, gates, drainage and 2026 costs.

Garage, Carport or Car Porch?
Enclosed Garages
An enclosed garage has walls and a door. It offers the best security and protection from sun, rain and dust. Moreover, it can store tools, bicycles and garden equipment. However, it costs the most and takes up floor area.
Carports
A carport is a roof on posts, with open sides. It shades cars from the sun and protects them from hail and bird droppings. Consequently, it suits homes where the compound is already secured by a wall and gate. Carports are quick and cheap to build.
Car Porches
A car porch sits under part of the house, often beneath an upper-floor bedroom or balcony in a maisonette. As a result, it shades cars without using extra land. It is the most popular parking solution on 40×80 and 50×100 plots.
Why Parking Design Matters in Kenya
Security
Cars parked on the road or outside the gate are vulnerable. Consequently, secure parking inside the compound is a top priority for most families. Moreover, a garage close to the front door reduces the time spent outside at night.
Protection From the Weather
Kenya's sun is intense. As a result, unshaded cars fade, cracked dashboards appear and interiors become ovens. Similarly, hailstorms in Nairobi, Nakuru and Kericho can dent car roofs. Even a simple carport prevents this damage.
Dust and Mud
In dusty areas such as Kitengela, Athi River and Machakos, cars are covered in dust within hours. Meanwhile, in the rains, murram roads turn to mud. Therefore, paved driveways and covered parking keep cars and homes cleaner.
Resale Value
Buyers expect parking. In fact, a home without secure parking is harder to sell or rent. Consequently, parking adds real value to your property.
Garage Doors
Roller Shutter Doors
Roller shutters are strong, compact and secure. They roll up into a box above the opening. Consequently, they suit garages with limited headroom. Motorised versions add convenience.
Sectional Doors
Sectional doors lift in panels along overhead tracks. They seal well and look neat. Moreover, they come in timber-look and modern finishes.
Swing and Sliding Doors
Traditional swing or sliding steel doors are cheaper. However, they need space to open. Therefore, check clearances on the driveway.
Matching the House
Garage doors are large and visible. As a result, they should match the windows and main door in colour and style. We show garage doors in the 3D renders, so the façade looks balanced.
Garage Sizes
| Garage type | Typical internal size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single garage | 3.0 m × 6.0 m | One car plus storage |
| Double garage | 6.0 m × 6.0 m | Two cars |
| Triple garage | 9.0 m × 6.0 m | Three cars or two cars plus a workshop |
| Tandem garage | 3.0 m × 11.0 m | Two cars nose to tail on narrow plots |
SUVs, pickups and vans need more space. Therefore, allow 6.5 m depth for long vehicles, and 2.4 m clear height for roof racks.
House Plans With Single Garages
A single garage suits most 3 bedroom homes on 50×100 plots. Usually, it sits beside the entrance, with a door into the kitchen or the utility area. Consequently, shopping goes straight from the car to the kitchen. Browse 3 bedroom house plans and 50×100 plot house plans.
House Plans With Double Garages
Double garages suit 4 and 5 bedroom homes, especially on quarter-acre plots. For example, our Kifaru bungalow and Savanna courtyard bungalow can accommodate double garages. Moreover, a double garage with a room above can host a home office, gym or guest suite. Browse 4 bedroom house plans.
Triple Garages and Mansion Parking
Large homes in Karen, Runda, Muthaiga and Kitisuru often need three or more parking bays. Additionally, guests need visitor parking. Consequently, mansions combine a triple garage, a carport and a turning circle. Our Karen villa and Tsavo safari villa show how parking fits large plots gracefully. Stilt and Basement Parking
Stilt Parking
Stilt parking lifts the building on columns, leaving the ground floor open for cars. It is common in apartment blocks on tight plots in Kilimani, Kileleshwa and Westlands. Moreover, it works for homes on sloping or flood-prone plots.
Basement Parking
Basement parking puts cars below ground. It frees up the plot surface for gardens and amenities. However, basements need waterproofing, ramps, ventilation and drainage. Therefore, they cost more. They suit luxury homes, apartments and commercial buildings. Read about house plans with basement.
Driveway Finishes
Cabro Paving
Cabro (interlocking concrete pavers) is the most popular driveway finish in Kenya. It is durable, easy to repair and drains well. Moreover, it comes in many colours and patterns.
Stamped Concrete
Stamped concrete imitates stone or brick patterns. It looks premium and needs little maintenance. However, cracks are hard to repair invisibly.
Exposed Aggregate
Exposed aggregate concrete shows the stones in the mix. It is attractive, non-slip and durable. Therefore, it suits modern homes.
Tarmac
Tarmac suits long driveways on large plots and estates. It is smooth and quick to lay. However, it softens in hot weather and needs edging.
Grass Pavers and Gravel
Grass pavers combine greenery with strength. Meanwhile, gravel is cheap and drains well. Both suit eco-friendly and rural homes.
Driveway Layout Tips
Turning Space
Reversing onto a busy road is dangerous. Therefore, plan a turning area so cars can exit forwards. On large plots, a turning circle around a garden or fountain adds grandeur.
Gradient
Steep driveways are hard in the rain. Consequently, keep gradients gentle, and use rough finishes on slopes.
Drainage
Driveways collect a lot of rainwater. Therefore, plan channel drains at the gate and garage, and slope surfaces away from the house. Read about water and power planning for Kenyan homes.
Width
A single-lane driveway needs at least 3 m. Meanwhile, a two-way driveway needs about 5.5 m.
Carport Designs
Steel and Polycarbonate Carports
Steel frames with polycarbonate sheets are light, affordable and let some daylight through. Consequently, the area under the carport does not feel gloomy. However, choose UV-protected sheets, because cheap ones yellow and crack in strong sun.
Steel and Iron Sheet Carports
Steel frames with iron sheets or tiles match the main roof. As a result, the carport looks like part of the house. This is the most durable option.
Shade Net Carports
Shade net carports are the cheapest. They block much of the sun but little rain. Therefore, they suit dry areas such as Machakos, Kajiado and Kitui.
Timber Pergola Carports
Timber pergolas with creepers create a green, natural carport. They suit country homes and coastal villas. However, timber needs treatment against termites.
Cantilever Carports
Cantilever carports have posts on one side only. Consequently, doors open freely and parking is easy. They suit modern homes and tight driveways.
Parking for Apartments and Commercial Buildings
Apartment and commercial projects face strict parking rules. For example, counties set minimum bays per unit or per square metre of office space. Therefore, parking often decides how many units fit on a plot. Stilt parking, basements and multi-level car parks solve this on tight urban plots. Our Kasarani apartments and Westlands residences show different approaches.
Commercial buildings also need loading bays, disabled parking and safe pedestrian routes. Read about commercial building plans in Kenya and browse our apartment plans.
Accessible Parking
At least one bay should suit a wheelchair user or an elderly parent. Consequently, it needs extra width, about 3.6 m, and a level, smooth path to the entrance. Moreover, a covered route protects from rain. This is required in public buildings and wise in family homes.
Landscaping Around Driveways
Driveways look harsh without planting. Therefore, we soften them with borders, trees and lawns. For example, a row of trees along the driveway shades parked cars and frames the approach. Meanwhile, low hedges guide headlights and hide drainage channels. Finally, lighting along the edges helps at night. Every design includes a free landscape plan.
Parking for Workshops and Hobbies
Some clients use the garage for more than cars. For example, a woodworking bench, a motorbike bay or a small business workshop can share the space. Consequently, extra sockets, good lighting, a sink and ventilation are worth planning. Similarly, a boda boda or bicycle bay near the gate keeps two-wheelers secure.
Gates and Security
Gates and parking work together. For example, a sliding gate saves driveway space. Additionally, a motorised gate lets you drive in without stopping on the road at night. Read about home security design in Kenya.
Parking by Plot Size
40×80 Plots
On a 40×80 plot, land is tight. Consequently, a car porch under a maisonette is usually the best solution. For example, our Kilimani maisonette and Ruiru maisonette fit on 40×80 plots with space for one or two cars. Browse 40×80 plot house plans.
50×100 Plots
A 50×100 plot fits a single garage or a double car porch with a bungalow, or two to three cars with a maisonette. Moreover, there is room for a small turning area. Our Baraka bungalow and Lavington maisonette suit this plot size.
Quarter Acre and Larger
On a quarter acre, a double garage, visitor parking and a turning area all fit comfortably. Meanwhile, half-acre and one-acre plots allow triple garages, circular driveways and separate staff parking. Read about house plans by plot size.
Parking in Different Locations
In Kilimani and Westlands, county parking ratios for apartments are strict. Therefore, stilt and basement parking are common. In satellite towns such as Ruiru, Syokimau and Kitengela, car porches and single garages dominate. Upcountry, in Nyeri or Kisii, plots are larger, so carports and detached garages are easy to fit. On the coast, in Nyali, carports protect cars from intense sun and salt.
Rooms Above the Garage
A garage roof is valuable space. For instance, a room above a detached garage can become a home office, a gym, a guest suite or a DSQ. Consequently, you gain living space without using more land. However, the garage needs a proper slab and a staircase, which our engineers design. Similarly, a flat garage roof can become a terrace connected to the upper floor of a maisonette.
Garage Features Worth Adding
Storage and Workbenches
Shelving, a workbench and wall hooks turn a garage into a useful workshop. Meanwhile, a separate store keeps garden tools and paint away from the car.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicles are growing in Kenya. Therefore, a dedicated power point or charging conduit in the garage future-proofs your home. It costs little during construction.
Lighting and Ventilation
Good lighting makes the garage safe at night. Additionally, vents let exhaust fumes escape.
Direct House Access
A door from the garage to the kitchen or utility room is convenient in the rain. However, it should be a solid, lockable door for security.
Common Parking Mistakes
Garages Too Small
Many garages are built too short for modern SUVs. Always allow at least 6 m depth.
No Visitor Parking
Visitors end up blocking the gate or parking on the road. Plan one or two visitor bays.
Poor Gate Position
Gates on blind corners or steep slopes are dangerous. Position gates carefully.
Garage Instead of Garden
On small plots, a large garage can swallow the garden. A car porch may be smarter.
